Honorary Doctorate

A doctorate bestows recognition of one’s academic knowledge in the chosen field of endeavor. But how can one bestow recognition of an individual’s contribution to society and to the world at large, or his pursuit of excellence in his chosen field of endeavor with or without academic learning? It is to such productive and eminent people that a Honorary Doctorate is awarded, as an acknowledgement of their achievements in life.

While awarding a Honorary Doctorate/Degree or a degree honoris causa (Latin: "for the sake of the honour") a University (or any degree-awarding institution) waives all mandatory requirements, such as matriculation, residence, study, and the passing of examinations. The degree is typically a doctorate or, less commonly, a master's degree, and may be awarded to someone who has no prior connection with the academic institution.

When a University awards a Honorary Doctorate for a distinguished eminence, it in turn adds value to its brand. For example, Leonardo Da Vinci never went to college but imagine the buzz that a University would create when it bestows a Honorary Doctorate on this genius!
